George K. Gillespie
George K. Gillespie. (1924-96) George Kennedy Gillespie was born in Belfast, the son of George W. Gillespie. He attended evening classes at Belfast College of Art, studying jewellery, silversmithing as well as painting. Due to a coronary attack in 1977, he retired from his bakery business and took up art professionally working from his studio in Co. Down. Gillespie admired the works of Frank McKelvey RHA RUA, James Humbert Craig RHA and Maurice Canning Wilks RUA ARHA who were all chiefly concerned with depicting the Irish Landscape. Gillespie’s work can be seen in the Department of Environment for Northern Ireland and the Office of Public Works in Dublin, as well as in many private collections in Ireland and abroad.
